God at the Edge

Psalm 90:1

“God is being increasingly edged out of the world now that it has come of age. Knowledge and life are thought to be perfectly possible without him.”

—LETTERS AND PAPERS FROM PRISON

We are living in a world which is bursting with discoveries and new knowledge. In such a world, the significance of God appears to be shrinking in the wake of the awesome progress of science. Christians are therefore tempted to make their faith more and more esoteric, other-worldly. Yet precisely the opposite should be taking place; our faith should be made relevant to this new knowledge. For while science may answer many of the “what” questions, Christian faith can be directed to the “why” questions that have to do with purpose, meaning, and application.

Thought
The progress of knowledge can never edge out the reality of faith in a God who has revealed Himself in Jesus Christ. It can only edge out a God whom we have tied too closely to our limited understanding of life and the universe.
