Dealing with Our Guilt

Ephesians 6:13

“Indeed, the tempter is only to be found where there is innocence; for where there is guilt, he has already gained power.”

—TEMPTATION

Innocence is never the place of safety, for that is where we can be tempted. But guilt need never be the place of despair, for our wrongdoing can be confessed and forgiven. Guilt that is unacknowledged and not dealt with becomes the place of danger, for guilt will always cause us to react in unhelpful and sometimes destructive ways. Moreover, undealt-with guilt often makes us blame others or causes us to compensate in ways that camouflage the real issues. The Tempter’s power in our guilt can be broken, but he will always attempt to catch us from behind when we think that all is safe and well.

Prayer
Father, grant that when all appears to be well, I may be on my guard. And that when I am trapped by guilt, I may run to You with my confession. Amen.
