Praying in the Right Way

Psalm 51:1-2

“If we are to pray aright, perhaps it is quite necessary that we pray contrary to
our own heart.”

—PSALMS: THE PRAYER BOOK OF THE BIBLE

Prayer is speaking and listening. Not only do we need to speak to God and listen to what He may say to us, but we also need to listen more carefully to what our own hearts are saying. Sometimes what is in our hearts is inconsistent with what is on our lips, and sometimes what is in our hearts is far removed from that which only seeks God’s honor and His kingdom. We therefore need to pray that our motivations, desires, and intentions will be purified by the light of God’s Word and the purging of His Spirit.

Thought
Our motivations, desires, and intentions can be complex and are often not single-minded. Moreover, there is much that we do from mixed motives. This needs to be faced honestly if we are to continue with some sense of integrity.
