Divided

Romans 7:19

“The healthy man is borne up in pain and nourished by that which is full of pleasure; he is torn in pleasure by pain, in good he is torn by evil, in evil he is torn by good. He is divided.”

—CREATION AND FALL

In pain, we can experience comfort and in distress, hope. In difficulty, we can experience practical help and in our loneliness, friendship. But in our comfort, we can also experience sadness and in our hope, an element of despair. In being helped, we can feel vulnerable and in friendship, we can feel trapped. While we may wish that things were not so, they cannot be otherwise. For if they were, we would no longer partake of the human condition. No matter how much we may wish that things would come to final resolution and peace, the struggle will always continue.

Meditation
While we are divided between good and evil and hope and despair, Christ’s work in our lives seeks to overcome evil and despair.
