Self and Service
Galatians 6:2-5
“The desire for one’s own honour hinders faith. One who seeks for his own honour is no longer seeking God and his neighbour.”
—LIFE TOGETHER
We need to be our own person. We cannot embrace the love of God and the service to our neighbor in such a way that we leave ourselves behind. Service is not self-negation, but it is the voluntary bringing of ourselves to a particular situation of need. But service does cut across our own priorities and, more specifically, should cut across the selfishness of the self where even in the serving of others, it still seeks to serve only the self.
Meditation
The self needs to be nurtured and sustained. When this occurs in a wholesome manner, then the self can serve the other. But the true service of the other is not to feed the self, but to empower the other.
