God’s Commands

Deuteronomy 6:17-18

“It is grace to know God’s commands. They release us from self-made plans and conflicts.”

—PSALMS: THE PRAYER BOOK OF THE BIBLE

God’s commandments provide us with a framework for our lives. From them we learn, among other things, that life is precious, that it cannot be violated, and that we cannot take from our neighbor what is not ours. But it is our responsibility to paint the details of the picture within this framework. It is one thing to know that we cannot take from our neighbor what is not ours, but another to know how to affirm and to be as Christ to that neighbor. For the final intention of the Law is not to set boundaries for what we should not do, but to motivate us to love God and our neighbor in the same way as we love ourselves.
