Not Our Idea of Life

Deuteronomy 6:5

“So the Christian lives from the times of God and not from his own idea of life.”

—TEMPTATION

We can live according to our own ideas regarding life’s purpose. Frequently, however, these ideas are simply variations on what our contemporary culture holds up as being important. These ideas ought to be regarded with grave suspicion, for their fruit is everywhere to be seen—self-interest, exploitation, success at any price, control, progress without due concern for the quality of life, material security, and an irrationality which fails to link actions and consequences. Rather than grasp what lies cheaply and closely at hand, we need to seek for deeper answers regarding life’s purpose. In the richness of Scripture, we can find much by which to redirect our lives.

Thought
Life’s purpose can never simply lie with ourselves. Nor does it simply lie in seeking the well-being of others. Instead, it lies in God who binds us to our neighbors.
