The Narrow Way

Matthew 10:18-19

“To confess and testify to the truth as it is in Jesus, and at the same time to love the enemies of that truth … is indeed a narrow way.”

—THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

The narrow way to which Jesus calls us has nothing to do with narrowmindedness. Instead, it has everything to do with the tension between tough love and a generous spirit, truth and openness, flexibility and firm commitment, love of God and love for our neighbor, and spirituality and worldly concern. The temptation is always that we opt for one or the other. For example, our pursuit of a firm commitment in our discipleship can so easily lead to rigidity, legalism, and narrow-mindedness, rather than to a firmness with flexibility marked by grace.

Thought
When we walk the narrow way, we will seldom please everyone. For the worldly person we will appear to be too spiritual, and for the spiritual person we will probably be regarded as too worldly.
