Grace and Obedience

Matthew 6:3-4

“Grace and active obedience are complementary. There is no faith without good works, and no good works apart from faith.”

—THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

There is nothing so sterile as an obedience marked by legalism rather than grace. This kind of obedience counts its virtues and inspires selfrighteousness. Obedience characterized by grace is an obedience which is creative and doesn’t keep a record of its own achievements. It almost doesn’t know itself. It acts because it is motivated by a loving concern that sees the need of the recipient and not the strength and virtue of the giver.

Meditation
Great acts of virtue and service marked by love are always more of a surprise to the giver than to the receiver.
