Principles and Flexibility

Matthew 5:20

“There is simply no possibility of erecting generally valid principles, because each moment, lived in God’s sight, can bring an unexpected decision.”

—NO RUSTY SWORDS

There are general moral principles. Murder, for example, is always forbidden for the Christian. Yet the Christian does not simply live by the moral law. Christians also live by the grace of God and by the influence of the Holy Spirit. Thus, while bounded by the moral law, the Christian’s response can always be creative, spontaneous, and impregnated by a grace that makes our acting a higher righteousness than simply the literal fulfillment of the law. Because love knows no boundaries, it always fulfills the law.

Meditation
Grace is not in conflict with law, but always supersedes it.
