The Matter of Rights

Exodus 20:13-17

“One can have a natural right of one’s own only if one respects the natural rights of others.”

—ETHICS

We all have certain inalienable rights which are usually enshrined in a nation’s legislation. The centerpiece to these rights is the notion of freedom and self-determination. But because we are all part of the human community, the state, and the family, freedom cannot simply mean freedom for me alone. It must also include freedom for others. So whenever we think of our own rights, we need to embrace the responsibility of thinking about the rights of others as well. Thus we are not truly free if others are not also free.

Thought
Rights are as much a responsibility as they are a privilege.
