The Joys of the Body
Song of Songs 2:16-17
“It is in the joys of the body that it becomes apparent that the body is an end in itself.”
—ETHICS
Christianity is not prudish. It celebrates the beauty of creation and rejoices in the way God has made us. It makes room for bodily pleasure, sexuality, comfort, and intimacy, but always within a framework of care and responsibility. For the Christian, neither asceticism nor licentiousness are credible options, but only passion and pleasure within the circle of agape love that serves the other and does not simply take or demand. Christianity celebrates the body, for even in the resurrection our bodies are recreated.
Meditation
If we cannot celebrate the beauty of the way God has made us, we will equate prudishness with spirituality and thus subvert God’s generous intention for our lives.
