God as Stopgap
Psalm 105:7-8
“It has been brought home to me how wrong it is to use God as a stop-gap for the incompleteness of our knowledge.”
—LETTERS AND PAPERS FROM PRISON
If God is simply seen as a means of explaining what science has not yet been able to explain, then not only may we eventually crowd God out of our world, but we are relegating Him to only a part of life. And more seriously, we are defining Him as irrelevant for our technological world. The opposite should be the case. The more our knowledge of the world grows, the more we should be celebrating God’s wisdom in creating this world, and the more we should be grappling with how God’s revelation in Scripture guides our understanding of what kind of world we ought to have, which technology is shaping.
Thought
The more our world is technologically shaped, the more pressing becomes the question of the meaning, purpose, direction, and quality of such a world. For this, God’s revelation in Scripture has an answer.
