Prayers for Vengeance
Psalm 58:1-7
“The prayer for the vengeance of God is the prayer for the execution of his righteousness in the judgment of sin.”

As Christians we can pray the prayers of the Psalms, including the prayers for vengeance. Such prayers have nothing to do with personal retaliation. We are not to curse our enemies, but to bless them. But we are to pray that God’s righteousness and justice will be manifest in our world. This means that we are asking that proud oppressors will be humbled and that the poor and needy will be lifted up out of the ash heap of their lives. And because God is the Great Liberator, He will dethrone the pharaohs of this world.
Meditation
The prayer for the vengeance of God can only come from one whose concern is to see God’s righteousness manifest in our world.
