The Ordinary
Psalm 121:7-8
“It is precisely in the commonplace surroundings of the everyday that the church is believed and experienced. It is not in the moments of spiritual exaltation, but in the monotony and severity of daily life and in the regular worship of God that we come to understand the church’s full significance.”
—SANCTORUM COMMUNIO
Sometimes our life together as a church is marked by exaltation and joy. More commonly, it is marked by perseverance and repetition. However, the commonality and ordinary nature of our experience should never be despised. The ordinary is as much a gift of God’s grace as the special and extraordinary. Moreover, it is most often the thankful appropriation of the ordinary that deeply shapes our lives.
Meditation
The ordinary, all the more, needs the eyes of faith to see its value.
