The Hope of the Future
Hebrews 11:1
“It is only out of the future that the present can be lived.”
—ACT AND BEING
We need to live the present with all its joys and difficulties, but the future should always beckon us. The future should not be significant because we idealistically hope that things may get better, for they may in fact get worse. Rather, the future should beckon us because the God who possesses the future will be ahead of us offering new grace, opportunities, and hope. Thus we live in anticipation of the things to come while at the same time being realistic about our present circumstances.
Meditation
If we lose the future—that is, lose our faith and hope in the God who is ahead of us—we will also lose the present.
