Welcoming the Past
Deuteronomy 6:12
“The past will come to you once more and be your life’s enduring part through thanks and repentance. Feel in the past God’s forgiveness and goodness; pray him to keep you today and tomorrow.”
—PRAYER FROM PRISON
Much of the past simply slips away from us, because forgetfulness is an essential part of our humanity. But in remembering, some of the past returns to us. Sometimes this remembrance calls for thankfulness. At other times it calls for repentance, an appropriate response when we remember things which have never been brought to proper closure.
Thought
It is not helpful for our present and future conduct if our past is characterized by murky shadows representing issues that have never been properly resolved. For these, we need to seek God’s forgiveness in order that our present will not be fed by reactionary impulses.
