Mixed Motives
Philippians 4:8
“It is remarkable how I am never quite clear about the motives for any of my decisions. Is that a sign of confusion, of inner dishonesty, or is it a sign that we are guided without our knowledge, or is it both?”
—THE WAY TO FREEDOM
We all wish that our motives related to decision making would be pure. But they seldom are. It is not that we do not want to do the right thing by God or others. It is more a matter of other things also influencing us: things such as personal security, acceptance, recognition, appreciation, popularity, and power. These things may not be wrong in themselves, but they crowd into the decision-making process and often mix our motives in deciding to go in a particular direction.
Prayer
Lord, I acknowledge that many of my motives are mixed. Grant that even where my own issues and concerns crowd in, that which is right might still emerge. Amen.
